early supporters included robert treat paine, jr. annual fundraising events raised substantial sums. instance, 1803 fundraiser @ trinity church included sermon samuel parker, ode written occasion, ... [and] franklin musical society [which] performed musical part, great satisfaction. after event, local newspaper publishers gilbert & dean wrote: have not learnt collections society made, must have been above 5 hundred dollars.


in 1807 orphanage located on south street; in 1823 on essex street; , ca.1840s on washington street. 1873, between 70 , 80 children provided in asylum. ... annual expenses, between $11,000 , $12,000, defrayed income permanent funds, , small extent annual subscriptions.


beginning in 1902, managers of asylum came feel ... in favor of use of family home care of children, in preference institution. gradually work took on new form, until, in 1907, asylum closed, , family home care entirely substituted.


in 1910 organization changed name boston society care of girls. years later, merged boston children s aid society in 1923 form children s aid association. in 1960, boston children s services formed through merger of children’s aid association , boston children’s friend society, adoption agency history dating 1883. in 2000s boston children’s services, new england home little wanderers, parents’ , children’s services, , charles river health management merged home little wanderers, provides variety of services in massachusetts.
