the japan maritime self-defense force (jmsdf) ordered 14 aircraft in 2003 use in both airborne mine countermeasures (amcm) , transport roles. aw101 modified kawasaki heavy industries, , japan defense agency designated model mch-101. special features include automated folding of rotor , tail. mine-hunting role, mch-101 has been outfitted northrop grumman s aqs-24a airborne mine-hunting system , an/aes-1 airborne laser mine detection system (almds) complete surface-to-bottom mine detection capability, mk-104 acoustic mine sweeping gear.


in 2002, agustawestland, kawasaki , marubeni entered general agreement cooperation; kawasaki began assembly of both ch-101 , mch-101 in 2003. kawasaki began licensed production of rtm322 engines in 2005. in separate agreement between marubeni , agustawestland, supply depot established in japan support mch-101 , ch-101 fleets. first mch-101 delivered jmsdf on 3 march 2006.


the mch-101 replace mh-53e (s-80-m-1) in amcm role. ch-101 operate in transport/support role antarctic missions, replacing sikorsky s-61a, , working in coordination ministry of education, culture, sports, science , technology.
