while tampa waited build new ballpark until guaranteed major league team, st. petersburg went ahead construction on domed stadium known tropicana field. completed in 1990, , st. pete awarded expansion tampa bay (devil) rays in 1995. meanwhile, tampa resumed long affiliation professional baseball in 1994, when new york yankees agreed move spring training home , florida state league affiliate (the tampa yankees) tampa if city built new ballpark use. city built george m. steinbrenner field (originally known legends field) across dale mabry highway tampa stadium, quarter mile northwest of former site of al lópez field. city of tampa upgraded nearby training facilities formerly known redsland use yankees.
