in 1894, jewish officer, alfred dreyfus, accused of giving secret french documents german army , condemned treason. in 1895, real culprit, commander esterhazy found, judged , although abundant proof of guilt brought court, acquitted. dreyfus , family decided contact president of senate put forth weakness of allegations brought against him. because late 19th century france plagued anti-semitic , nationalist ideals, dreyfus targeted due jewish origins , fell victim anti-semitic discrimination. eleven years after condemnation, dreyfus found innocent.
